Outpatient services are conducted in the main behavioral health location as well as in primary care offices and local schools. The fellowship is designed to provide a variety of postdoctoral training experiences to meet needed clinical hours and supervision requirements for licensure. The Pediatric Psychology/Behavioral Medicine Track offers experience working in an outpatient hospital setting providing therapy for a range of children and youth and will also develop pediatric behavioral medicine consultation skills for inpatient and specialty clinics. The following are areas of focus within this track: Participation in multidisciplinary teams for patients with Diabetes, Dialysis needs, GI, Down’s syndrome, Amplified pain, and Cystic Fibrosis. Consultation/liaison services to the inpatient and outpatient clinic population. The consultation service provides a range of services focusing on child/adolescent evaluations but also including family evaluations with short-term therapeutic interventions. Frequently referred problems include difficulty adjusting to acute and chronic illnesses (e.g., infectious diseases, diabetes, cancer, organ transplant, neurological disorders, gastrointestinal problems), concerns with adherence to medical regimens, enuresis and urinary incontinence, emotional difficulties, and behavioral conduct problems. The fellow receives advanced training in all aspects of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of these and other conditions. Specialized clinical training is possible in the areas of ADHD and related learning and behavior problems, pediatric behavioral medicine, pediatric pain rehabilitation, feeding disorders, autism, and other complex diagnostic issues. Intensive training modules may be available through collaboration with a staff member in one of these specialized clinics. This portion of the program experience will support understanding of the behavioral health issues that present with children and adolescents with acute and chronic illnesses in a large tertiary care pediatric hospital. Opportunities exist for individual and group interventions, including the Comfort Ability Program. The fellowship includes rotations in multiple medical subspecialty clinics throughout the hospital. This portion of the program will include three rotations with specific areas of focus and one additional rotation of choice dependent on the individual fellow’s goals and interests. The fellow will also work with patients on the Pediatric Rehabilitation Inpatient Team (PRIT). Through these practice settings you will be exposed to a broad range of patient ages and medical concerns. The goal of the training program is to allow fellows to further their professional development so that they can function independently as a psychologist across a wide variety of settings. The training program is designed to allow for the natural progression from internship training, where a variety of new clinical skills are learned, to a greater focus on the application of these skills with an increasing degree of independence. Along with this emphasis, training increasingly focuses on the development of professional skills necessary for independent functioning (professional development areas include serving as a consultant within specific medical teams, program development, licensure and/or grant writing).
